You Can't Say One Thing And Do Something Else For Long.
People Will Learn Not To Believe What You Say.

This lesson came through to me later in life after suffering a string of disappointments of having people not do what they said they were going to do. People really intend to do what they say, but they often con themselves as well as others.

I was hired as a consultant to check out a computer company in the Midwest offering a unique service. Unfortunately the company's financial results were negative and growing worse. The records showed rosy projections every three months, and as a result of the projections the financial backers kept pouring more money into the firm. As the results got worse, the projections got rosier. The recommendation to the backers was to cut their losses. This recommendation was obvious when looking at what the firm did, but not so obvious when looking at what they said.

When you are on the receiving end, look at what others they do, not what they say. It is a MUCH more accurate indicator of their true position.
